Trick or Treat!

October 30, 2012

All dressed up at his preschool Halloween party. :)

October 28, 2012

He hasn't been feeling well. Fever, grumpiness, not sleeping well, not eating much. Tonight I took him up to see the pediatrician. Ear infection. No fun. But, I am thankful that it is something simple and easily treated. I am sure he will be back to his happy, fun self by tomorrow, and I am so grateful for that.

My oldest daughter is a party person. She always has big plans for lots of fun things. (She gets that from her father, not from me.) She has been planning all month to have a costume party. (In fact she had already told her friends at school she was having party before I had told her she could have the party.) She finally talked me into it and we invited a few of her friends and planned some games. (Of course the day of the party her little brother woke up sick and so we had to do some last minute arranging so the party could go on. Luckily Grandma was willing to take him to her house.) But the party turned out fun, the girls were so happy all day and loved wearing costumes and playing games and being with friends.

I have been prepping him for Halloween night. :) If my plan goes well he will be used to his costume and won't have a temper tantrum when he has to wear it for trick-or-treating. He is going to be a pro at walking around in a giant green suit with floppy feet and wings.

My son brought this doll for show and tell at preschool today. He thinks it looks like his dad and he even refers to it as "daddy". My husband is always telling me to buy my sons some action figures to play with because they are always playing with their older sisters dolls and tea sets. Guess now I don't have to because I think "daddy" is totally like an action figure.  He even comes complete with a wrist watch, works boots and a painted on wedding ring. :)

Crazy sock day at school.

October 23, 2012

This morning's walk to the bus stop. Cold, dark and slushy.

October 22, 2012

Rainy day.

(Photo taken as I sat in my car waiting for the rain to die down so that I could get myself and my kids out without getting completely soaked. We ended up just having to make a mad dash inside. Well, as mad as one can dash while carrying a diaper bag, a kid and dragging another kid by the arm.)

When these two are finished bathing about half the water is left in the tub and the other half is on the bathroom floor.

October 20, 2012

Waxing autumn leaves. I have been wanting to do this with the kids for a couple years but never got around to it until today. We gathered all the leaves at Grandma's house (since we have no trees at our house. Then the girls and I dipped them in the wax (the boys had lost interest by then, which was good because I don't trust them around hot liquids anyway). It was a fun little project for a Saturday.

Project found here.

I talked my dad into helping me take the kids to get pumpkins. (We went to the same place we used to go when I was a kid.) The kids walked through (and on top of) all the pumpkins and got to choose the one they wanted. The rule of the day was "if you can carry it you can have it". (I know my kids and I knew they would see those huge pumpkins and want one and I would be stuck paying for, carrying, and carving 100 pound pumpkins and that doesn't sound fun.) Everybody found the pumpkin they wanted and everybody went home happy.

October moon.

(When I was taking pictures tonight my son wouldn't come outside, he said "it's too spooky out there".)

October 17, 2012

When these two are together they are usually  fighting and arguing. But today he let her paint his fingernails and so she had to let him paint hers. Probably not your average brother sister activity, and it was quite a mess, but at least they were getting along. And now they both have matching globs of paint all over their hands to prove it.

Good morning.

October 15, 2012

Look at this lively, energetic bunch. :) They are doing exactly what I wanted to do all afternoon but of course no one ever lets the mom sit on the couch in the middle of the day staring at the television. I don't think they even noticed I was taking their picture. But on a positive note, at least no one was kicking or fighting or jumping off the back of the couch.

Today she gave her first talk in Primary. She was a little nervous but more excited.

October 13, 2012

My little boy (who I still refer to as my baby). He is loud and he cries more than I think he should. :) He runs away every chance he gets. He wants to be held whenever I am busy doing something else. He throws food every. single. meal. He climbs on everything. He says "Hi Mom!" with a big smile when I walk in the room. He can't resist pushing buttons(computer, dishwasher, phone etc), if he sees a button he absolutely must push it, it is like he can't help himself.  He sings the cutest song which only has one word over and over again "daddy, daddy, daddy". He gives me tight hugs around my neck when I get him out of his crib. He likes to talk on the phone. He brushes his teeth about 5 times a day. He ask where his dad is about 20 times a day. He spills something about 100 times a day. He has finally learned to sleep through the night (mostly). He is sweet. He makes me happy.
I love him.

From my kitchen window I can see and hear the kids when they play out in the backyard. Lately he has been standing on the deck yelling across the fence to the next door neighbor girl. They yell the same things everyday, "What are you doing?" "What are you eating?" and "What is your name?" Then she does something funny and he laughs and then he shows her how he can spit off the side of the deck and she laughs. One of these days I will let him out of the backyard so he can go meet his friend rather than yelling back and forth with her.

October 11, 2012

Yesterday she got a retainer. I am predicting two weeks or less until she loses it or leaves it on her lunch tray at school and it gets thrown in the garbage. :)

October 9, 2012

We attempted to have a family meeting tonight. We wanted to talk to the older kids about some things that are going on at our house. I am not sure anyone listened to anything I said and I am pretty sure at one point I was yelling trying to talk over them to tell them that we need to stop yelling in this house. The only thing anyone really cared about was the white board and who would get to write on it next.

October 8, 2012

And this is what I am left with after our very chilly outing. Piles and piles of laundry, blankets, dirty shoes, clothes and all the "just in case" stuff I packed that we never used that I now get to put away. I think there is a law, sort of like the law of physics that states:
"the number of hours you are away from home, multiplied by the number of people who traveled with you, is equal to the amount of hours the mother/wife will spend cleaning, washing and putting things away once you are back home."
So for us that is 24 hours times 6 people....I will be cleaning up after this little adventure for a long time.

October 7, 2012

We decided to take a little overnight trip.
(Just stepping into the RV is like taking a trip back in time to 1986,  blue carpet, tan and peach-ish color decor, windows you actually have to roll up and down (which my kids thought were so fun) a wooden cup holder hooked to the dashboard and some lovely floral looking couch cushions. Everything inside is strangely in almost perfect condition, it is really like stepping back into the 80s)
The plan was to listen to General Conference while we were in the "great outdoors." I thought it was going to be so peaceful and relaxing. :)
We got a late start and had to try and listen to the first session as we drove, which was noisy and the reception went in and out as we drove through the canyon. Once we got there and parked, and then moved to a new spot and parked again, we attempted to figure out how to work all the gadgets (toilets, water, kitchen etc.) We pretty much know nothing about RVs so that was an adventure in itself. We ended up listening to the second session of conference while the kids colored at the picnic table and of course my youngest ran off every five minutes to step in deer poop. We found out that there were no fire pits at the campsites and because the fire danger was so high --the only fires allowed were ones in portable fire pits (which we do not own) so we couldn't have a fire. The kids built their own pretend fire and roasted leaves. (My son even tried to eat one of the leaves.) By night time is was pretty chilly and we couldn't figure out how to get the heater to work (the air conditioner was working great though, of course). It was getting really cold, we finally tucked all the kids into their bed with sleeping bags and multiple blankets. It was a very (VERY) cold night. In the morning the water to the toilet and sink was frozen since we never could figure out how to get the heat on. The kids never complained they were just happy to be there. So our first try at "RV-ing" wasn't without difficulty but it was fun anyway.

October 6, 2012

My husband surprised the kids by driving up to the house in this today, a 1986 Winnebago. The kids were jumping up and down with joy while I stood on the porch laughing in disbelief. Guess we are going to go have some fun this weekend. :)

(I think the words of Cousin Eddie on the movie National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation describe this moment most accurately, "That there's an RV!")

October 5, 2012

Dinner time around here has been pretty bad lately. We have been eating out way too much, and it isn't the good restaurant kind of eating out, it's the drive-up window kind of eating out. Once again dinner time rolled around tonight and I was unprepared so I went to go pick something up. I asked the girls to set the table while I was gone. When I got home with the food, they had set out the plates and forks and they had even put this little flower in a vase in the middle of the table.  I thought it was so cute they had thought to do that. So, even though our dinner consisted of mashed potatoes from a styrofoam container and chicken from a bucket, we had a flower on our table. I think it totally took our family dinner up a notch to fine dining. :)

October 4, 2012

He was cleaning out the garage today and these two were his "helpers".

October 3, 2012

We visited Bingham Canyon to see the Kennecott Copper Mine today. The older kids liked seeing it and visiting the little museum. My youngest boy just wanted to run away from me and climb on everything (he and my other son attempted to climb anything with big signs that read "Caution Do Not Climb"). I was sort of frazzled and my husband was semi-grumpy and I forced everybody to get their picture taken in front of the big tire (sometimes taking pictures sort of sucks the fun right out of the moment). But, it was still pretty cool to see how huge and deep it was (almost a mile deep) and how tiny the little dump trucks down at the bottom looked.  It is a pretty amazing sight.
